As a producer, Steve Buckingham, is a four-time Grammy winner with 27 number one singles to his credit.  He has been awarded 11 Platinum and 19 Gold albums.

The special relationship that he develops with artists, musicians and songwriters has yielded Top Ten singles on eleven different charts: Pop, Country, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Adult Contemporary, Americana, Bluegrass, Christian, Hispanic, Triple A, and Dance.

For ten years Steve was the Vice-President of A&R and staff producer for Columbia Records.  He served for eleven years as Senior Vice-President of A&R and producer for Vanguard and Sugar Hill Records.

In addition Steve is a musical historian.  He created the college course: How Rhythm and Blues & Rock ’N’ Roll Tore Down the Walls of Segregation.  He will be teaching this course at Vanderbilt University in the fall of 2009 and has taught it at the University of Richmond.




Lecture Format

    • Brief discussion of Steve’s background in the music business

    • Experiences performing with African American recording artists in the segregated South of the 1960's

    • DVD of photos from era of the Civil Rights Movement with music.

    • Discussion of the role AM radio disc jockeys had in exposing white teenagers to black Rhythm and Blues.

    • DVD of various musical icons and their effect on segregation. Followed by discussion and Q&A from the audience.

    • Play CD examples of integrated studio musicians making records in segregated cities.

    • DVD of the Southeastern phenomenon known as Beach Music where white bands performed with black recording artists at the height of the Civil Rights Movement.
