Arlen Schumer is the creator and designer of Visions
From The Twilight Zone (Chronicle Books, 1991), the
only coffeetable art book about the legendary television series,
treating its television images like black and white art photography
and its dialogue and narration like poetry. He developed a multimedia
presentation based on the book that has toured universities and
cultural institutions around the country, including The 2nd Rod
Serling Conference at Ithaca College in 2008.
In
his multimedia Twilight Zone presentation, Schumer traces
the show’s roots in early 20th Century surrealist art
and ideas, and in turn its influence on modern art and American
pop culture. Part lecture, part performance piece, Schumer reads
excerpts of dialogue and narration from the series like spoken
word poetry, while Twilight Zone soundtrack music plays in sync
and images from the episodes form the backdrop. In addition, the
classic episode "Eye of The Beholder" is screened in
its entirety. From high art to low art and back again, Visions
From The Twilight Zone will make you look at The Twilight
Zone--and television itself--as you never have before..
